LEAD with Strengths.
The LEAD™ Framework for dementia rehabilitation, designed to
help clinicians support engagement, function, and personhood.
A strength-based approach helping rehabilitation professionals support people living with dementia with empathy, evidence, and practical strategies.
WHAT IS LEAD™?
The LEAD™ Framework (Leveraging Existing Abilities in Dementia) for Rehabilitation Professionals is a strength-based approach designed to help clinicians recognize what remains — and use it to support meaningful participation, function, and quality of life.
Rather than focusing on decline, LEAD™ guides rehabilitation professionals in identifying preserved abilities and translating them into practical treatment strategies that support engagement, independence, and personhood.
The framework is grounded in three core pillars - the 3 C’s - that shape clinical interaction and decision-making:
Communication
Support understanding, connection, and participation through clear, intentional interaction.
Cognition
Leverage preserved memory, attention, and learning systems to facilitate success.
Coping
Address emotional, behavioral, and environmental barriers that influence engagement and outcomes.
Together, these pillars help clinicians move beyond a deficit-focused model and deliver rehabilitation that is person-centered, evidence-informed, and deeply human.
LEAD™ reframes dementia rehabilitation —
From decline to possibility.
From limitations to participation.
From diagnosis to personhood.
It is a framework grounded in evidence, guided by empathy, and built for real clinical practice.
Because rehabilitation should begin with what remains.
WHY THIS MATTERS.
Rehabilitation professionals want to help people living with dementia remain active, engaged, and independent — but many feel underprepared to address the cognitive, behavioral, and communication challenges that shape everyday care.
Too often:
dementia is viewed as a barrier to rehabilitation
patients are underestimated or excluded from therapy
clinicians lack practical, dementia-specific strategies
care partners feel overwhelmed and unsupported
Yet evidence shows that people living with dementia can benefit from rehabilitation when care is person-centered and aligned with their preserved abilities.
LEAD™ exists to bridge this gap. Strength-based. Evidence informed. Rehabilitation focused.
By focusing on what remains — not what’s lost — clinicians can build stronger therapeutic relationships, improve participation, and support meaningful outcomes across the continuum of care.
